Cowgirl Basketball Plays Final Exhibition Game
Nov. 10, 2006
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team closed out the 2006-07 exhibition season with an 83-45 victory over the Colorado Christian Cougars, on Friday night, in Laramie.
"We stressed the fact that we need to take care of the basketball as the level of play jumps up a great deal on Sunday," said head coach Joe Legerski. "So keeping our turnovers around 11 or 12 I'm very happy, and when we only had seven tonight it was an excellent effort. Colorado Christian played very hard for 40 minutes tonight, so to play that well defensively shows well for us.
"I thought Justyna Podiemska had a nice game tonight. She got up and down the court with ease and plays with so much confidence, which in turn helped the other players relax and get in to a rhythm as well."
Four players finished the night with double-figures led by junior Justyna Podziemska. She recorded 16 points, four rebounds and three steals in her 22 minutes of play. Guard Jodi Bolerjack finished with 15 points, four assists and three steals followed by Megan McGuffey with 13 points and Aubrey Vandiver with 11 points. Vandiver led the way in rebounds with eight, while Elisabeth Dissen finished with seven. The Cowgirls shot 34-74 (.459) from the field and 14-33 (.424) from beyond the arc, while committing only seven turnovers.
Colorado Christian was led by forward Sara Davis who had 12 points and five rebounds in 28 minutes of play. Monica Chase and Talmai Aguirre both finished with nine each. Ainsley Barratt came off the bench with a team high six rebounds while chipping in seven points. They were 14-45 (.311) from the field and 6-15 (.400) from the three-point line.
After Colorado Christian took an early 4-3 lead to begin the game, Wyoming ran off eight straight points to take a seven point lead, 11-4. The Cougars responded with a 5-0 run to pull within two, 11-9, but Wyoming would come back with a 13-4 run of their own to open up a double-figure lead, 24-13. They increased that margin to 17, 35-17, as CCU could only manage to score four points in almost five minutes. In the final minutes of the half, the two teams played even the rest of the way as the Cowgirls went in to the lockerroom up 43-25.
Jodi Bolerjack led all scorers at the half with 13, while Sara Davis finished with nine for CCU. The leading rebounder for the Cowgirls was Elisabeth Dissen with four while Davis equaled that. Wyoming shot 17-36 (.472) from the field while the Cougars were 9-25 (.360).
The Cowgirls scored the first six of nine points to make the score 49-28. They really started to get in to their offensive swing as they went on a 12-2 run to go up 31-points, 61-30, while holding the Cougars to a pair of free throws over a four minute span. It was never close after that as the Cowgirls increased their lead closing out the game on a 22-15 run to win by a final of 83-45.
Wyoming will open up regular season play on Sunday, Nov. 12 against the University of San Francisco. The game is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
