Nov. 11, 2005
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming basketball team dominated in their final exhibition game of the 2005-06 season with a 60-31 victory over the Metro State Roadrunners, on Friday night, in Laramie.
"We prepared for this game as if it were a regular season game," said head coach Joe Legerski. "We went in to this game wanting to take specific aspects of Metro State's game plan away and we were able to do that tonight. They are a good team and we did a nice job on the defensive end to shut them down."
Four Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures, including sophomore Jodi Bolerjack. She recorded 13 points, three assists and three steals in 30 minutes of play. Senior Erin Hicks and sophomore Hanna Zavecz both had 11 points followed by Megan McGuffey with ten. Michelle Taylor led all rebounders with seven. Wyoming shot 22-58 (.379) from the field and 7-10 (.700) from the charity stripe.
The Roadrunners were led by Rianna Harris who had ten points and six rebounds. Metro State shot 12-52 (.231) from the field and a dismal 1-18 (.056) from beyond the arc.
It was a low scoring game through the first five minutes as the two teams managed to score a combined 12 points. Up 7-5, the Cowgirls hit a couple of shots to increase their lead to seven, 12-5. After a basket by the Roadrunners at the 13:01 mark, both teams went a little cold as Wyoming scored only three points over the next seven minutes, while Metro State went scoreless. With the score 15-9 in favor of UW, they would close out the half on a 14-3 scoring run to take a 29-12 lead in to the locker room. Jodi Bolerjack led all scorers at the half with 11, while Hanna Zavecz brought down six rebounds. Wyoming was 11-33 (.333) from the field compared to 5-23 (.217) by the Roadrunners.
It was all Cowgirls to start the second half with a 9-0 run to extend the lead to 38-12, while Metro State went over four minutes with out a basket. The Roadrunners continued in their struggle to score points as they managed to only record eight in the first 12 minutes of the second half. It would never be close as the Cowgirls wrapped it up to win by a final of 60-31.
The Cowgirls will open the regular season at home next weekend as they host the Sacramento State Hornets, on Saturday, Nov. 19. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m., and can be heard on www.wyomingathletics.com.
