LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Chadron State at Wyoming - Wyoming 95-77 - Box Score
The University of Wyoming Women's Basketball Team opened up the 2000-01 season with a 95-77 victory, over the Chadron State Lady Eagles, on Saturday afternoon in Laramie.
The game started off slowly for both teams with only 15 points scored in the first five minutes. Eventually, the Cowgirls would pick up their play and take a 47-38 score into halftime. Despite being down, the Lady Eagles hung tough closing the gap to 56-52 with 15 minutes left to go in the game. But, Wyoming pulled away with their largest margin of 18 points and would go on to win the game 95-77
Chadron State was led by Janelle Hutt, who finished the game with 17 points and four rebounds. The Lady Eagles were 22-59 (.373) from the field and 60% from the free throw line.
Four out of five starters were in double-figures for the Cowgirls, including sophomore guard Carly Stucky. She finished the game with 20 points, eight rebounds, eight steals and eight assists. She was 5-9 from the field and a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Senior Jessica Gibbs also chipped in 19 points and a team high 11 rebounds. The Cowgirls were 34-72 (.472) from the field and 22-27 (.815) from the free throw line.
"It wasn't our best performance, but the thing about this team is that they're scrappy and they'll work hard. We just need to do a better job of keeping our key people on the floor," said head coach Cindy Fisher. "But, I was really happy with Heather Shaffner coming in and running the point for us. She hasn't run it all year for us, and I was proud of her coming in and keeping it under control."
"Carly is a competitor, highly motivated and knows what it takes. She's so unselfish, and when you see her with double-figure field goal attempts you know she's going to have a big game. I thought her emotion was great and she did a good job of leading the team."
The Cowgirls run their record to 1-0 overall. They will hit the road
next week as they play in the Oregon State Classic with an opening round
match-up with Kansas State.
