Cowgirl Basketball Earns Third Victory of the Season
Nov. 27, 2000
LARAMIE, Wyo. - Oakland Univ. at Wyoming - Wyoming 82-73 - Box Score
Despite falling behind early in the game, the Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball Team (3-1) managed to pull out an 82-73 victory over Oakland University (2-2) on Monday night in Laramie.
The game started out fairly close, but with the score tied at ten all Oakland would go on a 9-0 run to gain the 19-10 lead. They would keep that advantage throughout the first half, and in fact took a 43-37 score in halftime.
But, the Cowgirls came out fired up in the second half scoring the first seven points to take a 46-43 lead. Oakland would come back in the half to take a 52-48, but it wouldn't be enough. Wyoming regained the lead with ten minutes in the half, and never looked back as they would take the game 82-73.
Sarah Judd led the way for the Grizzlies with 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Oakland shot 49% from the field, but were outrebounded 51-29 in the game.
Four players finished the night in double-figures for the Cowgirls, including senior Jessica Gibbs. She finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, along with shooting 8-14 from the field. Sophomore forward Darci Arsene also had a career night with 12 points and nine rebounds. The Cowgirls were 32-73 (44%) from the field and 7-22 (32%) from the three-point arc.
"I was really worried about this game, and how we would bounce back and focus mentally," said head coach Cindy Fisher. "I know they've got to be drained, because I know I am after playing three games in four days. But, I was really proud of them to get in the hole like that and fight back with different lineups and positions."
"I think they had some fear in them that they needed to come out strong in the second half or this team was going to beat them. They realized that, and we made some adjustments defensively and came up with some steals when we really needed them. "
The Cowgirls now move to 3-1 overall, and will host Colorado on
