Ducks Beat Cowgirls in Laramie
Dec. 20, 2009
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball Team (9-2 overall) had a difficult day as they struggled to a 78-66 loss against the Oregon Ducks (9-2 overall), on Sunday afternoon, in Laramie.
"I was pleased with the effort of the team in today's game," said UW head coach Joe Legerski. "To dig such a big hole at the beginning of the game, which at one point was 22 or 24 points, it became an issue for us to battle back. We pulled to within 11 with 12 minutes to go and we had a couple of opportunities and they just didn't fall. Oregon made plays and it's very difficult to simulate that kind of pressure in practice. We got better as the game went on but it was determined in the first eight minutes of the game how the tempo would affect us."
The Cowgirls were led by junior Aubrey Vandiver who recorded her fourth straight double-double with 19 points and ten rebounds. She was 7-16 from the field and 5-10 from beyond the arc. Hillary Carlson followed with 15 points and a career high 13 rebounds while Kristen Scheffler added 15 and Emma Langford recorded 12 points. As a team, Wyoming shot 22-63 (.349) from the field and 11-29 (.379) from beyond the arc.
Oregon was led by Micaela Cocks with 17 points in 31 minutes of play. Nia Jackson and Taylor Lilley each recorded 14, while Amanda Johnson added ten. Victoria Kenyon was the Ducks leading rebounder with eight. They 30-65 (.462) from the field and out rebounded the Cowgirls 41-38.
Oregon started off the game quickly as they took a 6-0 lead through the first media timeout. The Cowgirls struggled from the field as it took until almost the 14 minute mark for them to score. The Ducks continued to dominate as they extended the lead to 20, 26-6. Wyoming tried to make a dent into the lead with a small 5-2 run to make it 28-11. Unfortunately, Oregon scored the next 10 of 15 to regain a 22-point lead, 38-16. Wyoming would out score the Ducks in the final four minutes of the half but went into the lockerroom down 45-28.
The Cowgirls came out in the second half and went on an 8-3 run to bring the score to 12, 48-36. They would inch even close by scoring seven of the next nine to pull within nine, 52-43 with 14:15 to go in the game. Oregon responded with a 12-2 run to extend the lead back to 19, 64-45. Wyoming would make one final push, but couldn't pull any closer than 11. They would fall 78-66.
The Cowgirls resume play on Thursday, Dec. 31, against the Boise State Broncos. The game is set to tip at 2 p.m. in Boise.
