Cowgirls Fall To Boise State On The Road

Boise, Idaho (Dec. 28, 2004) - The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (7-3 overall) dropped their opening game after the Christmas break with a 55-44 loss to the Boise State Broncos (5-4 overall) on Tuesday night in Boise.

Wyoming struck first with four early points, while it took the Broncos almost four minutes to get their first score with a three point field goal by Cassidy Blaine. After Boise State took the lead 5-4, the Cowgirls went on a scoring drought of their own until a basket by Sara Hippen helped them regain a 7-5 advantage. It wouldn't last long as an 8-2 run by BSU gave them their largest lead of the game 13-9. Three unanswered pulled UW to within one, but unfortunately they wouldn't score for the remainder of the as Boise State would take an 18-12 lead in to the locker room.

The Cowgirls were led in scoring and rebounding with four points and five rebounds in the half. They were 5-24 (.208) from the field and a dismal 1-9 (.111) from beyond the arc, along with committing nine turnovers.

Tasha Harris and Jodi Nakashima led the way for the Broncos with five points, while Harris finished with four rebounds. Boise State shot 7-18 (.389) from the field and 3-4 (.750) from beyond the arc.

It continued to be a struggle out of the half time break for the Cowgirls could only manage to score five points in the first several minutes, while the Broncos lead increased to eight points, 23-15. Finally Wyoming seemed to get something going with a 5-0 run to pull within one. Unfortunately, Boise State went on a 16-3 run of their own to open up their largest lead of the game, 39-23. The Cowgirls wouldn't give up though as they scored the next nine of 13, which brought them to within nine, 43-34, but the Broncos came right back with four points to regain a double-digit lead, 47-34. One final push by Wyoming helped them pull within eight, unfortunately it was too little to late as the Boise State Broncos came away with a 55-44 victory.

Wyoming was led by Ashley Elliott with 21 points, 19 of them coming in the second half, along with three rebounds and three steals. She was followed by Hanna Zavecz, who finished her night with ten points and 11 rebounds. The Cowgirls were 14-47 (.298) from the field and 4-17 (.235) from beyond the arc, but out rebounded the Broncos 35-24.

Boise State was led by Michelle Hessing who finished with 13 points and four rebounds. The Broncos shot 19-39 (.487) from the field and 7-12 (.583) from the three-point line.

The Cowgirls will continue their road trip on Thursday night against the Idaho State Bengals in Pocatello, Idaho at 7:00 p.m.
