Dec. 29, 2011
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team resumed play following the holiday break and suffered a 60-53 loss against the Bowling Green Falcons on Thursday night. Wyoming drops to 4-8 overall while Bowling Green stands at 9-3 on the season.
"We talked to the team in practice that this is going to be as close to a conference game that they will play in," said head coach Joe Legerski. "Bowling Green is very talented, they're used to winning and it becomes a possession by possession game. You have to take advantage of every opportunity you have. I liked the way we competed tonight. We were knocking down shots early and had great movement. The game became physical and I liked the way we responded. On the flip side when it becomes physical you play on edge both defensively and offensively.
Three Cowgirls finished the evening in double-figures led by junior Ashley Sickles. She had a game high 16 points along with eight rebounds and two assists in 37 minutes of play. Chaundra Sewell recorded 13 points and a career high 14 rebounds while Kaitlyn Mileto chipped in ten points and four assists. Wyoming shot 21-58 (.362) from the field but struggled going 7-16 (.438) from the free throw line.
The Falcons were led by Jessica Slagle with 16 points and six rebounds in 35 minutes of action. She was followed by Chrissy Steffen with 15 points, while Alexis Rogers brought down 12 boards. BGSU shot 19-52 (.365) from the field and out rebounded UW 42-37.
Wyoming got on the board first with a basket by Chaundra Sewell. Bowling Green answered on the next possession to even it up. After each team hit three-point baskets, the Cowgirls scored five of seven to take a 10-7 lead through the first media timeout. The Falcons hit a free throw to end the run but UW scored six unanswered giving them a 16-8 advantage. Bowling Green battled back with an 11-2 run to give them their first lead of the game 19-18. A basket from Ashley Sickles put the Cowgirls back on top, with was answered with a Falcons basket making it 21-20 with 5:47 left in the half. They would extend the lead to six, 28-22, by scoring seven of the next nine. The Cowgirls scored the final basket of the half but still went into the lockerroom down 28-24.
Bowling Green scored the first three points of the second half giving them a 31-24 lead. An Ashley Sickles basket was the first score for Wyoming which was answered by five straight points to give BGSU a double-figure lead, 36-26. A three-point basket by the Cowgirls pulled them to within six, 36-30. The Falcons responded with a 7-0 run to increase the lead to 13, 43-30. A layup by Kaylee Hoffman stopped the Cowgirl drought and started an 8-3 run of their own making it an eight point game, 46-38, with 9:17 remaining in the game. Each team would trade scores over the next stretch as Bowling Green would continue to maintain a lead. With the score 53-42 in favor of the Falcons, the Cowgirls made one final push scoring the next 11 of 16 to close the gap to five, 58-53, with under a minute to play. Unfortunately, their comeback would fall short as Bowling Green took the win 60-53.
The Cowgirls return to action on Monday, Jan. 2. They will play their final non-conference game against the Eastern Michigan Eagles. The game is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. in Ypsilanti, Mich.
