The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (7-5 overall) got back to their winning ways with a ten point victory, 58-48, over the Adams State Grizzlies (5-7 overall) on Tuesday night in Laramie.

"The holiday season got a little bit brighter with this victory tonight," said UW head coach Joe Legerski. "I think over the last couple of games our confidence has been shaken. We did a little bit of self evaluating and talked about what we needed to do as a team. We asked this team to step up as a group, make some plays and take the pressure off Megan (McGuffey) and Emma (Langford). I'm pleased when you look at the number of players that scored tonight."

Freshman Kristen Scheffler led all scorers for the Cowgirls with ten followed by Emma Langford and Jade Kennedy with nine. Kennedy also led the way with ten rebounds. Wyoming shot 18-51 (.353) from the field and 16-23 (.696) from the free throw line.

Adams State was led by Misti Solomon with 12 points and six assists, while Vera Jo Bustos added 11 points and a team leading nine rebounds. The Grizzlies were 21-57 (.368) from the field, while out rebounding the Cowgirls 38-35.

Adams State struck first as they scored six straight to begin the game, while it took the Cowgirls three minutes to get on the board. An Elisabeth Dissen free throw started a 6-2 run for Wyoming to pull them to within two, 8-6. A Megan McGuffey three-pointer gave them their first lead, 9-8, with 14:50 on the clock. They would score the next four straight to increase the lead to five, 13-8. The Grizzlies would respond with a 5-0 run to even it up at 13. The two teams would play fairly even over the next several minutes with the Cowgirls taking a 22-17 advantage. Both teams went cold for several minutes until a Kendra Coveal basket ended the drought for Adams State. Wyoming went over four minutes without scoring until a Randi Richardson bucket got them back on track. The Cowgirls would take a 28-23 lead into the locker room.

It was back and forth scoring to begin the second half as they Cowgirls continued to lead 37-31 through the first media timeout. Adams State responded with two straight baskets to pull within two, 37-35. Wyoming came back with a 6-0 run to extend the lead back to six, 43-37. Both teams went cold as two Hillary Carlson free throws ended a four and a half minute drought for UW, while Adams State went over five minutes without scoring. The Cowgirls would extend their lead to double-figures by scoring six of the next ten to make it 51-39. The Grizzlies started to chip away at the lead as they went on a 5-2 run to make it a nine point game, 53-44. The Cowgirls kept their composure and earned a tough 58-48 victory.

Wyoming will continue play at home this weekend as they host the San Francisco Don, on Saturday, Jan. 3. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
