Cowgirl Basketball Hosts Two MWC Games at Home This Week

The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will be at home this week for two Mountain West Conference games. They will take on the San Diego State Aztecs, on Wednesday, Jan. 17, and the TCU Lady Frogs, on Saturday, Jan. 20. The San Diego State game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. while the TCU game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
Wyoming is currently 10-5 overall and 1-2 in MWC play after falling against UNLV, 51-46, and BYU, 55-52, last week on the road. They are led by Justyna Podziemska who is averaging a team leading 14.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. Junior forward Hanna Zavecz follows with 14.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists, while Jodi Bolerjack is adding 11.7 points. The Cowgirls are shooting 350-808 (.433) from the field and 124-335 (.370) from beyond the arc. They currently rank first in the Mountain West Conference in three-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage.
The Aztecs are currently 8-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play so far this season. They are led by Jennifer Layton who is averaging 10.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. She is followed by Quenese Davis who is adding 10.2 points and five rebounds a contest. They return three starters and six letterwinners to a team that went 3-24 overall and 0-16 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago. The Cowgirls and the Aztecs have met 29 times previously in this series. Wyoming leads the series 16-13 and has won the last 11 straight. The last time the two teams met was March 2, 2006 when the Cowgirls defeated the Aztecs, 78-45, in Laramie. They are coached by Beth Burns who is in her tenth season.
UW will close out the weekend by taking on the TCU Lady Frogs, on Saturday afternoon, at 2:00 p.m. in Laramie. The Lady Frogs are currently 13-4 overall and 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference, while being ranked 23rd in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. They are led by Adrianne Ross who is averaging 17.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. She is followed by Ashley Davis who is adding 16.5 points and 4.6 rebounds a contest. They return four starters and ten letterwinners to a team that went 19-12 overall, 11-5 in the Mountain West Conference, while advancing to the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The Cowgirls and the Lady Frogs have met eight times previously in this series. TCU leads the series 5-3. The last time the two teams met was March 8, 2006 in the first round of the MWC Tournament. TCU came away with a 63-55 victory. They are coached by Jeff Mittie who is in his eighth season with the program.
Don't forget that it's Teacher Appreciation Night on Wednesday. Teachers can receive half price tickets ($4.00) with a school id. Tickets must be purchased prior to game day. Also, it's the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk for Women Event on Saturday, Jan. 20. If you participate in the event, admission to the Cowgirl game is free. Registration is $20.00 prior to Saturday or $25.00 on the day of the walk.
Note; due to several scheduling conflicts, the Cowgirls will not make up the game against the Denver Pioneers, which was cancelled on Dec. 20 because of the weather.
