Wyoming's Gibbs Named MWC Women's Basketball Co-Player Of The Week
Jan. 31, 2000
LARAMIE, Wyo. - For the first time in women's basketball, the Mountain West Conference has selected co-Players of the Week. Wyoming's Jessica Gibbs and Utah's Kristina Andersen, both junior forwards, share this week's honor. Gibbs spurred Wyoming (10-8, 1-4) to its first conference victory and a split in this week's action. The Cowgirls posted an 86-72 win over Air Force on Saturday after falling to New Mexico, 76-61, on Thursday. Andersen helped Utah (14-4, 5-0) remain undefeated in league play with a 59-55 victory at rival BYU on Friday.
Gibbs led the Cowgirls in scoring with 18 points vs. New Mexico on Thursday, collected her fifth double-double of the season as she grabbed 10 rebounds and also registered a career-high five assists. In Saturday's win over Air Force, Gibbs surpassed the 20-point mark for the fourth time this season as she netted 21 points and collected seven rebounds. For the week, Gibbs totaled 39 points, 17 rebounds, six assists, three steals and a block during the two games. She shot .652 (15-for-23) from the field and was a perfect 9-for-9 (1.00) from the free throw line. She scored in double-figures in both games to improve her season total to nine games. Gibbs currently stands third in the conference in rebounding with an 8.3 average, 13th in scoring with an 11.8 average and tied for seventh in steals (1.94). Her accuracy has her listed second in field goal percentage (.579) and third in free throw percentage (.803).
Andersen led all scorers with a career-high 22 points as the Utes claimed an important win at rival BYU on Friday. She shot .700 (7-for-10) from the field, including 3-for-5 (.600) from three-point range and was near perfect (5-for-6 for .833) from the free throw line. Tied for fourth in conference games with a 14.0 scoring average, Andersen is listed 24th in overall games with a 9.3 average. Her .483 field goal percentage is eighth in overall games, but she is shooting .550 to tie for fifth in conference games. She also stands 17th in the league in rebounding with a 4.8 average. Added to her impressive numbers for the week is the fact that Andersen is dealing with major issues off the court as she juggles the normal demands of college life with frequent trips to visit her terminally ill mother in Oregon.
Both of these selections are the first for each player in their careers and mark the first for their respective teams this season. Gibbs is a native of Wells, Nevada, who transferred to Wyoming from the College of Southern Idaho. Andersen is a product of Marist High School in Eugene, Oregon.
