Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball Set to Host Lobos on Sunday

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team will begin the second part of the 2008 Mountain West Conference schedule this week as they host the New Mexico Lobos, on Sunday, February 10. The game is set to tip off at 3:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on CSTV.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game. The WBCA's "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

Wyoming is currently 18-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play after falling to the BYU Cougars, 56-42, last Saturday. They are currently ranked 22nd in both the Associated Press Poll and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll. Senior Hanna Zavecz leads the way for UW with 14.1 points and 3.8 assists. She is followed by fellow senior Justyna Podziemska who is adding 12.6 points and 5.8 rebounds, while Aubrey Vandiver is chipping in 11.7 points and a team leading 6.7 rebounds per game. The Cowgirls are leading the MWC in scoring defense, allowing just 52.2 points per contest and blocked shots (5.29 bpg). They are also shooting .417 (458-1101) from the field, .325 (141-434) from beyond the arc and .697 (287-412) from the free throw line.

UNM is currently 12-9 overall and 4-4 in the MWC after a 74-47 victory over the Colorado State Rams on Wednesday night. They are led by Dionne Marsh who is averaging 14.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. She is followed by Amy Beggin who is adding 12.9 points and 3.5 rebounds. They return two starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 24-9 overall and 11-5 in the MWC a year ago. This is the 55th meeting between the two schools. New Mexico leads the series 32-22. The last time the two teams met was January 9, 2008 as the Cowgirls defeated UNM, 58-52, in Albuquerque. New Mexico is coached by Don Flanagan who is in his 13th season with the program.

 

 

In conjunction with the game, the University of Wyoming Athletics Department is sponsoring the Fourth Annual Walk for Women. Along with the walk, a silent auction will be held with all proceeds from the event directly benefiting the Wyoming Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The walk will be held in the War Memorial Fieldhouse with registration set to begin at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $25.00 per person and all participants will receive a t-shirt and lunch along with free admission to the Wyoming vs. New Mexico WBB game at 3:00 p.m. Registration can be completed online, at the University of Wyoming Athletics Department or on the day of the walk.
