Cowgirls Look to Continue Recent Improved Play Versus Rebels

The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team will open up the week with one of two road games on Wednesday, Feb. 18, against the UNLV Lady Rebels. The game is set to begin at 8 p.m. Mountain Time.
The Cowgirls will enter this game with a 12-11 overall record and 4-6 in Mountain West Conference play after earning a 64-61 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs, on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Hillary Carlson led the way with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Kristen Scheffler chipped in 11 points.
Four Cowgirls are scoring in double-figures this season led by sophomore Hillary Carlson who is averaging 11 points, while freshman Kristen Scheffler is adding 10.7 points per game. Senior Megan McGuffey and freshman Emma Langford follow closely with 10.6 and 10.4 points respectively. McGuffey also leads the way with six rebounds per contest.
Carlson ranks fourth in the league in field goal percentage and 13th in scoring, while Scheffler leads the league in three-point field goals made (2.52 tpfgm) and is 17th in scoring. McGuffey ranks 13th in rebounding and 19th in scoring.
In conference games, Carlson is fifth in scoring (14.9 ppg), eighth in field goal percentage (49-106, .462) and ninth in rebounding. Scheffler is third in three-point field goals made, sixth in minutes played, while being 12th in scoring (11.2 ppg).
UNLV comes into the game with a 10-14 record overall and 3-8 in MWC play this season. Shamela Hampton leads the way with 14.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, while Jamie Smith is adding 10.7 points and 9.0 boards.
They return four starters and 11 letterwinners to a team that went 8-22 overall and 4-12 in the MWC a year ago. This is the 29th meeting between the two teams. UNLV leads the series 18-10, but the Cowgirls have won three out of the last four. The last time the two teams met was Jan. 17, 2009 as UNLV defeated the Cowgirls, 71-64, in Laramie. UNLV is coached by Kathy Olivier who is in her first season with the program.
