COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
The Mountain West Conference announced the pairings for the 2002 EAS Women's Basketball Championship to be held at the Thomas & Mack Center, March 6-9 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
No. 16-ranked Colorado State (23-5, 12-2) clinched the No. 1-seed in the championship for the first time in the league's three-year history with a 58-54 victory over New Mexico Saturday. The Lobos (21-6, 10-4) and BYU (19-8, 10-4) tied for second in the league standings with 10-4 marks, but New Mexico earns the No. 2-seed since it swept the Cougars this season. The Rams, who have a 12-8 overall postseason conference tournament record after winning last year's MWC Championship, will face Air Force Wednesday in a quarterfinal game. This will be the first meeting between Colorado State and Air Force in the postseason. New Mexico, which owns a 9-10 conference tournament record, will meet San Diego State in the opening round for the second year in a row. The Lobos defeated the Aztecs last year, 55-49. BYU brings a 13-9 tournament record into this year's conference championship and will play Wyoming in the postseason for just the second time in school history, first time in the MWC.
