MWC Announces 2001 EAS Women's Basketball Championship Bracket
March 3, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Mountain West Conference announced the pairings for the 2001 EAS Women's Basketball Championship to be held at the Thomas & Mack Center March 7-10 in Las Vegas, Nev. No. 13-ranked Utah (25-2, 14-0) clinched the No. 1 seed in the championship for the second straight season after posting a perfect 14-0 record in league play and Colorado State (21-6, 10-4) solidified the No. 2 seed after sweeping its final two conference games.
The MWC had to resort to the tie breaker to decide the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds as New Mexico (17-11, 8-6) and BYU (16-11, 8-6) finished with identical conference records and split the regular season series. New Mexico and BYU also each lost twice to Utah, split with Colorado State and San Diego State, and swept both Wyoming and Air Force. The Lobos were the beneficiary of the coin toss, and as a result, earned the No. 3 seed while BYU slipped to No. 4. UNLV (18-8, 8-6), also in a tie for third place in the conference, dropped in at the No. 5 seed as a result of the tie breaker (the Rebels were the only 8-6 MWC team to be swept by Colorado State). San Diego State (13-14, 5-9) is the No. 6 seed, followed by Wyoming (11-16, 3-11) at No. 7 and Air Force (3-24, 0-14) at No. 8.
The Wyoming Cowgirls and Colorado State Rams will play on Wed., March 7, at 3:30 p.m. Mountain Time. The game will be carried by SportsWest TV (in Wyoming, it will be on Channel 5, KGWN-TV in Cheyenne). Satellite coordinates for that game are Tel Star 5, Transponder K-12.
The Utes, who enter the championship with 19 straight wins vs. MWC teams, have a 15-7 overall tournament record after winning last year's inaugural MWC Championship. The Utes are 7-0 all-time vs. first-round opponent Air Force. Colorado State, who owns a 31-24 series lead over first-round opponent Wyoming, has a 9-8 tournament record. New Mexico brings an 8-9 tournament record into this year's conference championship. The Lobos are 6-13 all-time vs. first-round foe San Diego State. BYU is 11-8 all-time in conference tournaments and the Cougars are 9-5 in series play vs. first-round opponent UNLV.
The winner of the 2001 EAS Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Championship will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Last year, Utah and BYU earned at-large bids to the NCAA, while New Mexico and Colorado State earned berths to the WNIT.
