Cowgirl Basketball to Open up MWC Tournament against Aztecs

For the second year in a row, the Wyoming women's basketball team will face the San Diego State Aztecs in the opening round of the 2008 Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Championships. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, March 12, 2007, at 10:00 p.m. Pacific Time and 11:00 p.m. Mountain Time. The game will be broadcast on the Mtn. Sports Network. The Cowgirls enter this week as the third seed while the Aztecs are the sixth seed in the tournament.
Wyoming is currently 24-5 overall and 12-4 in conference play after a 68-34 victory over BYU in their last outing of the regular season. Senior Hanna Zavecz leads the way with 13.5 points, 3.7 assists and 1.6 blocks. She is followed by fellow senior Justyna Podziemska who is adding 12.7 points and 5.8 rebounds, while Aubrey Vandiver is chipping in 11.1 points and a team leading six rebounds per game. The Cowgirls are leading the MWC in scoring defense allowing just 52.6 points per contest and blocked shots (5.17 bpg). They are also shooting .416 (632-1520) from the field, .339 (205-604) from beyond the arc and .706 (398-564) from the free throw line.
San Diego State is currently 16-12 overall and 7-9 in the MWC. They are led by Jene Morris who is averaging 13.6 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. She is followed by Paris Johnson who is adding 12.1 points and Allison Duffy with 10.2 points per game. They return four starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 12-16 overall and 5-11 in the MWC a year ago. This is the 34th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 20-14 and has won the last 15 of 16 meetings between the two. Wyoming swept the season series. The last time the two teams met was Feb. 20, 2008 as the Cowgirls defeated the Aztecs, 55-44, in San Diego. San Diego State is coached by Beth Burns who is in her 11th season with the program.
The Cowboy Joe Club along with the Coors Brewing Company will also be hosting several hospitality events during the week in Las Vegas. Their first one will be held on Wednesday, March 12, prior to the men's game. It will be held at Bahama Breeze on the NW corner of Flamingo and Paradise (1 mile from the Thomas & Mack Center). Come often; as hospitalities will take place all week long (please call for exact start times). The hospitality will feature live entertainment from Laramie's own Danno & Friends, UW apparel by the Brown `N' Gold Outlet, the UW Alumni Association, no-host food from the Bahama Breeze menu, and $2 drink specials all week long from Coors Brewing Company. The hospitality has no cover charge.
