Texas Tech Added to Wyoming Basketball Schedule

April 17, 2001

Wyoming Athletics Director Lee Moon has announced that Texas Tech University has been added to the Cowboy basketball schedule for each of the next two seasons.

Moon said Tuesday that Wyoming and Texas Tech have signed a two-game contract that calls for the Cowboys traveling to Lubbock, next season for a Jan. 2, 2002 meeting, and the Red Raiders returning the game in December of 2002, as part of the Casper Shootout. That game is scheduled for Dec. 14.

"We are constantly looking for quality opponents," Moon said, "and certainly Texas Tech is just that. Not only are they from one of the most respected conferences (Big 12) but the fact that Bobby ( Knight) will be directing the Red Raider team is extremely attractive. He and I have been friends for many years, and I appreciate him working with us. There is no doubt that he will make that program one that will be competitive nationally. It's a good series for our program to be involved in, and it should be a very attractive game for the Shootout."

The Cowboys have won six of the 10 games played in the series with the Red Raiders. The last time the two teams met came, ironically, at the Casper Shootout. Texas Tech won that game, 77-74, on Dec. 28, 1996. The Cowboys' last victory in the series came on Dec. 5, 1987, an 84-65 win at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie. The last time the two teams met in Lubbock was Dec. 11, 1986, and the Red Raiders won that game, 69-61.

In addition, Moon also announced that the Cowgirls will be playing Texas Tech, considered one of the nation's premier women's programs, in that Dec. 14, 2002, Shootout. The Lady Raiders have been to 12 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, winning the national title in 1992-93.

"The Lady Raiders are one of the finest women's programs in the country," he said. "and it's a great positive for our program, and the Shootout to have them in Casper. The Cowgirls will have a senior-dominated team that season, and it should be an outstanding matchup."

It will be the Cowgirls' first meeting ever with Texas Tech.
