Aug. 28, 2002
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Eight teams that competed in post-season play will highlight the 2002-03 Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball schedule, announced Thursday by Wyoming Athletic Department.
Brigham Young, Colorado, Colorado State, New Mexico, Texas Tech, UNLV and Weber State all competed in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, while Rice was a participant in the WNIT. The Cowgirls could possibly face the Rice Owls in the second round of the Mt. McKinley North Star Invitational, in Fairbanks, Alaska, over the Thanksgiving weekend. They will also see the Colorado Buffaloes and the Texas Tech Lady Raiders early in the season, as they will host the Buffaloes at home and Texas Tech at the Wyoming Shootout on December 15. They will also have a regular home-and-away series with BYU, CSU, New Mexico and UNLV.
The schedule will open up with the Cowgirls playing the first six of ten games on the road, but they start of at home with an exhibition game on Nov. 9 against Colorado School of Mines and then host Metro State, on Thursday Nov 14, to begin the regular season. They will play in the Mt. McKinley North Star Invitational on Nov. 29-30, along with road games against Washington State, Eastern Washington, Cal State Northridge and Texas Tech in Casper.
The Cowgirls open up Mountain West Conference play on the road, Jan. 16 and Jan. 18, against rivals Utah and Brigham Young. Their home conference schedule will begin on Thursday, Jan. 23 against the Air Force Academy.
"This year's non-conference schedule is extremely competitive and will be a great test for this veteran basketball team," said head coach Cindy Fisher. "We have succeeded in putting together these strong non-conference match-up, which will prepare us for the highly competitive Mountain West Conference."
Fisher enters her fifth season with the Cowgirl Basketball Program. She
returns four starters and 11 letterwinners to this year's squad,
including Second Team All-MWC selection Carrie Bacon.
