Cowgirl Basketball to Participate In Wyoming Shoot-Out

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

In their only game of the week, the Cowgirls will host the Western State Mountaineers, on Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Wyoming Shoot-Out. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Casper Events Center in Casper, Wyo.

The event is the first half of an annual double-header with the Cowboy Basketball team in Casper. The Cowboys will play Wichita State at 3:30 p.m., immediatley following the women's game.

The Cowgirls are currently 6-2 overall after earning a split on the road last week with a win over Idaho State, 79-58, but coming up short 70-59 against Montana in Missoula. They are led by junior Hanna Zavecz who is averaging a team leading 15.5 points along with 3.6 rebounds. Jodi Bolerjack follows with 15.2 points, while Justyna Podziemska is adding 13.3 points and a team leading seven rebounds per game. The Cowgirls are shooting 194-440 (.441) from the field and 77-189 (.407) from beyond the arc.

The Mountaineers come in to the week with an overall record of 3-4 after earning a 78-55 victory over Colorado School of Mines, on Thursday night. They are led by Audra Lawson who is averaging 15.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. She is followed by Taryn Brennan who is adding ten points and 5.7 boards per contest. Western State returns four starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 9-17 overall and 7-12 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference a year ago. The Cowgirls and the Mountaineers have only met one previous time during the regular season. The last time the two teams met was Dec. 11, 1981 when the Cowgirls defeated Western State 94-64 in Laramie. They are coached by Al Sokaitis who is in his second year with the program and as a head coach.
