The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team opened the spring portion of their 2005-06 schedule today at the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz., hosted by Northern Arizona University. The Cowgirl team had a difficult day as a whole and head into tomorrow's final round in last place. UW shot a team score of 348 (+60).

"Everyone seemed to be uncomfortable today and that led to a rough start," said UW head coach Josey Stender. "This will be tough to come back from. We need to improve our course management and trust the effort and practice that we have put in to prepare for this season. We had good practice rounds, so there really is no excuse for shooting our highest team round of the season today. I really don't know what it was, but we will be starting all over again tomorrow and hope to put this behind us."

With marks towards Wyoming's team score were sophomore Laura Mengelkamp at 82 (+10), freshman Mikala Henzlik with a 85 (+13), junior Michelle Camaione scored 88 (+16), sophomore Lindsay Bauknecht shot 93 (+21) and junior Whitney Hernandez at 94 (+22).

Host NAU holds the team lead after a 309 team score on the first day, one stroke ahead of UTEP and three strokes ahead of Portland State. UC-Riverside is fourth with a 317, while Grand Canyon is fifth overall in the 13-team field.

Lumberjack Sophia Choi is tied for the individual lead with Portland State's Haley Brown, after each golfer posted a first-round two-over par 74. PSU's Danielle Reilly is one stroke back after an opening 75, while five student-athletes are tied at 76.

UW junior Kayla Morrison, 91 (+19), and sophomore Kaelee Aegerter, 93 (+21), played as unattached individuals.

The inaugural Northern Arizona Red Rocks Invitational is being played at the Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona. Oakcreek plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,074 yards.

The 36-hole event will conclude on Sunday with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
