UW Women Sixth Through First Day of NAU Red Rocks Invite
March 3, 2012
Sedona, Ariz. -
Senior Juanita Rico fired a 76 (+4) in the first round of the NAU Red Rocks Invitational on Saturday afternoon to help the University of Wyoming women's golf team sit tied for sixth through the first day. The Cowboys carded a 322 (+34) at the Oakcreek Country Club, while Eastern Michigan leads the 20-team field at 305 (+17).
"This was our first competitive round of the spring season and for the most part I was pretty pleased," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "We improved from yesterday by about 27 shots, so the plan is to continue that in tomorrow's final round."
A candidate for all-conference honors, Rico picked up right where she left off in the fall to finish tied for seventh individually through the first round on Saturday. She has averaged 75.4 strokes per round this season and was the top Cowgirl in all four fall events.
"I felt really good about Juanita's round today," Jensen said. "She made a triple on hole number nine, but overall she played a solid round."
Junior Dana Zamprelli sits tied for 26th after a 79 (+7) in the first round, while sophomore Emily Wood fired an 82 (+10) for a 46th-place tie. Sophomore Stacey Blunt hit 85 (+13) in the opening round and senior Jenna Zamprelli rounded out UW's scorers at 88 (+16). Freshman Samantha Stancato and sophomore Kristen Jensen played as individuals and finished at 87 (+15) and 94 (+22), respectively.
"Tomorrow we need to have a little more presence on the course and confidence in our game," Jensen said. "They need to keep in check and maintain their composure and we'll continue to improve."
The tournament concludes with 18 holes at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
