Zamprelli's Career Day Paces Cowgirls in Arizona
March 4, 2012
Sedona, Ariz. -
Junior Dana Zamprelli tied her career low with a round of 71 (-1) to finish second individually on Sunday in the NAU Red Rocks Invitational and guide the University of Wyoming women's golf team to a sixth-place finish in the team standings. The Cowgirls improved their round by 10 strokes from Saturday to finish at 634 (+58) on the Oakcreek Country Club, while Eastern Michigan took the title in the 20-team field with a 603 (+27).
"The team had a real positive improvement from yesterday's round," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "If they played yesterday like they did today, they have a chance to win the tournament, so we can take a lot of good out of this first event of the spring."
Zamprelli started the day tied for 26th after a 79 (+7) during Saturday's round, but she quickly made a charge up the leaderboard thanks to the best round of the event and ended the day tied for second at 150 (+6). The performance is the best of Zamprelli's career, as she notched her first top-25 finish. She also shot a 71 during the second round of 2010 CU/Heather Farr Memorial.
"This was probably the best collegiate tournament Dana has put together," Jensen said. "She was in the same position to post a good round yesterday, but really held it together today. She played how she is capable of playing. It will be interesting to see how this propels her through the rest of the spring."
Zamprelli had plenty of help, as six of the seven Wyoming players improved their score in the second round. Freshman Samantha Stancato also tied a career low with a 76 (+4) to shoot 11 strokes better on Sunday and finish 50th overall at 163 (+19). Senior Juanita Rico carded a 79 (+7) in the second round to notch a top-25 finish at 18th with a 155 (+11), while fellow senior Jenna Zamprelli posted an 82 (+10) on Sunday for a total of 170 (+26).
Sophomores Stacey Blunt and Emily Wood improved by three and two strokes, respectively, in the second round to finish at 162 (+18) and 167 (+23). Redshirt freshman Kristen Jensen rounded out UW's players at 181 (+37).
The Cowgirls return to action on March 12-13 at the Fresno State Lexus Classic in Fresno, Calif.
