GOODYEAR, Ariz. -
The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team finished in 15th place on Wednesday at the Bobcat Desert Classic in Goodyear, Ariz. A highlight for the Cowgirls throughout the event was the steady play of sophomore Laura Mengelkamp. The second-year UW standout finished the 54-hole tournament tied for seventh place of 89 golfers, following a closing round of 80 (+8).
UW posted a team mark of 335 (+47) in their final 18 holes, after shooting a score of 330 (+42) on Tuesday and another round of 335 on Monday.
"We did not finish the tournament like we wanted to," said Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender. "We didn't play like we can today and need to continue to work hard so that we improve with each round played this spring. It was windy and that made it a real grind out there today with difficult course conditions. We will learn to adapt and play through those conditions."
Northern Arizona (937) edged the early event leader Sacramento State (938) by one stroke for the team title in the 16 school field. Montana was third at 939 and Eastern Washington was fourth with a score of 940.
NAU also took individual medalist honors, as Sophia Choi shot a final round 75 (+3) and a three-day total of 226. Montana's Marry Hasselberg was second at 229, with four golfers tied for third place at 231.
Additional rounds by the Cowgirls on Wednesday included an 84 (+12) by junior Whitney Hernandez, a tally of 86 (+14) from freshman Mikala Henzlik and a round of 87 (+15) from sophomore Lindsay Bauknecht.
Although she was disqualified individually earlier in the tournament for an incomplete scorecard, Wyoming junior Michelle Camaione did play the final two days and her mark on Wednesday of 85 (+13) did count towards the Cowgirl team score.
The three-round Bobcat Desert Classic, hosted by Montana State, was played at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear. Palm Valley plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,215 yards.
The next competition for the Cowgirls will be March 13-14 at the Santa Clara/Colby Invitational in Carmel, Calif.
