UNLV Invite Comes to a Close on the Cowgirls
March 10, 2010
BOULDER CITY, Nev. -
The UNLV Spring Invitational came to a close Wednesday at the Boulder Creek Golf Club with the University of Wyoming women's golf team finishing in 18th place.
The Cowgirls were led by sophomore Juanita Rico with her third round 80 (+8), while finishing the tournament tied for 61st place. Junior Molly Black matched Rico's third round 80 (+8) and ended the tournament in a tie for 67th place.
"I'm pleased with the way that we played today, in as worse conditions as I have ever seen," said UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen. "It was our first time out and generally it will take a tournament to get into a groove after practicing inside for so long."
Senior Jonelle Martinez had the team's best third round with her final 76 (+4), giving her a total of 237 (+21) and a tie for 72nd place. Meanwhile freshmen Dana Zamprelli and Taylor Smalley rounded out the field for the Cowgirls.
"The girls made the adjustment of finishing each round better and as a coach that is what you want to see, the girls improving," said Jensen. "We will have a few days to practice and then to the next tournament where I'm sure we will see more improvement from top to bottom."
Up next for the Cowgirls will be the Jackrabbit Invitational held in Primm, Nev., Monday and Tuesday, March 15 and 16.
