Blunt Paces Wyoming on First Day of MountainView Collegiate
March 15, 2013
TUCSON, Ariz. -
Junior Stacey Blunt sits at 153 (+9) after Friday's first two rounds of the MountainView Collegiate to pace the University of Wyoming women's golf team to 15th in the team standings at 626 (+50). Texas Tech leads the 15-team field at 573 (-3) on the MountainView Golf Course.
"We know we have the potential to play well on this course, but we were trying to force good scores today instead of playing free and relaxed," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We really struggled with our putting. We let a few shaky putts affect our confidence and the rest of our game."
Blunt posted a 78 (+6) in the first round and followed with a season-low 75 (+3) to tie for 52nd. Senior Dana Zamprelli is four strokes back at 157 (+13) in a tie for 61st after rounds of 78 (+6) and 79 (+7) and sophomore Samantha Stancato has the same total with rounds of 79 (+7) and 80 (+8). Freshman Kathleen Kershisnik fired a career-low 75 (+3) in the first round and followed with an 84 (+12) in the second to sit tied for 66th at 159 (+15). Junior Emily Wood is tied for 77th at 165 (+21) after shooting 83 (+11) and 82 (+10). Redshirt freshman Emily Woodard is playing as an individual and hit rounds of 91 (+19) and 87 (+15).
"I'm proud of Stacey and the continued progress that she is making," Stender said. "Over the last seven months, what we've been working on has really paid off. She gave herself opportunities today and capitalized on them. There was nothing flashy about her rounds, but she kept it together and stayed steady."
The tournament concludes with 18 holes at 8:30 a.m. MT tomorrow.
