Wyoming's Blunt Tied for Third after First Day of BYU Entrada Classic
March 18, 2013
ST. GEORGE, Utah -
Junior Stacey Blunt is tied for third at 147 (+3) after Monday's first two rounds of the BYU Entrada Classic, as her continued solid play puts the University of Wyoming women's golf team tied for seventh in the 15-team field at 623 (+47). The Cowgirls were third after an opening-round 303 (+15), but slipped down the leaderboard with a 320 (+32) in the second round.
"I was pleased with our team getting to a solid score again in the first round, but we just have to get there more consistently now," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "I'm proud of how we played certain holes that demand a lot of focus on this challenging course. There isn't very much room for errant shots, but as a whole we handled that well today."
The top Cowgirl in the last two tournaments, Blunt tied a career low with a 73 (+1) in the first round and followed with a 74 (+2) in the second. She is just five strokes back of the leader and is seeking her sixth career top-25 finish, including her second of the spring. Fellow junior Emily Wood struggled at the last tournament, but was back to old form on Monday with rounds of 78 (+6) and 77 (+5). She is tied for 25th at 155 (+11) and is after her first career top-25 finish.
"The consistency and mental toughness that Stacey and Emily showed on the golf course today was great," Stender said. "Stacey is playing confident and steady while really responding well to the different challenges we've faced from course to course. It's not going absolutely perfect for Emily, but she understands how to bounce back and keep playing for a score."
Sophomore Samantha Stancato was one stroke off her career low with a 74 (+2) in the first round, but slid back with an 87 (+15) in the second to sit tied for 52nd at 161 (+17). Freshman Kathleen Kershisnik is 64th at 164 (+20) after rounds of 78 (+6) and 86 (+14), while senior Dana Zamprelli has been slowed by a back injury and totaled 174 (+30) with a 91 (+19) and 83 (+11). Playing as an individual, redshirt freshman Emily Woodard hit 107 (+35) and 100 (+28) for a total of 207 (+63).
The tournament concludes with 18 holes tomorrow morning.
