Wyoming Completes Solid Tournament Against Stacked Field at MountainView Collegiate
March 24, 2012
Tucson, Ariz. -
All four scorers for the University of Wyoming women's golf team shot below 77 during Saturday's final round of MountainView Collegiate, as the Cowgirls carded the third-lowest team score in school history with a 900 (+36) for 11th place at the MountainView Country Club. Texas Tech paced the strong field of 15 teams at 858 (-6).
"To be consistently competitive for three rounds in such a deep field is a great stride forward for us," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "It was a combination of believing we had the talent to be there and knowing we are working on the right things at the right time. We still weren't 100 percent today, but we met our team goal as far as our score goes."
UW faced its toughest test of the spring at the event, but was competitive all weekend. The Cowgirls carded a season-low 298 in the first round, followed with a 303 in the second and ended with a 299 in the third round. The team total of 900 (+36) was just nine strokes off UW's best tournament ever and tied for Wyoming's third-best total with the same score at the 2008 Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic.
Senior Juanita Rico once again paced the Cowgirls with a season-low 71 (-1) in the final round to finish tied for 13th at 218 (+2). Her total score tied for the fourth-best in program history, while her top-25 finish was her sixth of 2011-12 and 21st of her career.
"Juanita could have even shot lower today," Stender said. "The difference from yesterday afternoon to today was her confidence in her club selection."
Sophomore Emily Wood posted a 76 (+4) on the final day to finish tied for 29th at 222 (+6). She missed her first career top-25 finish by just two strokes. Freshman Samantha Stancato shot UW's second-best final round with a 75 (+3) to finish tied for 58th at 230 (+14), while sophomore Stacey Blunt rounded out UW's top four on the final day with a 77 (+5) for 234 (+18) and a tie for 71st. Junior Dana Zamprelli hit an 80 (+8) in the third round to tie for 83rd at 240 (+24), while senior Jenna Zamprelli carded a 77 (+5) in the final round for the same total score.
"This performance was huge for Emily," Stender said. "It gives her a lot of confidence going into our tournament and conference. It shows her she can compete at a high level, and she's still got a lot of golf left in her UW career."
UW is off the next two weeks, before hosting the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on April 9-11 in Chandler, Ariz., at the Ocotillo Golf Resort.
