Cowgirls Conclude Action at SDSU Farms Invite
April 2, 2013
RANCHO SANTE FE, Calif. -
Junior Stacey Blunt carded an 81 (+9) to tie for 56th at 244 (+28) and finished as the top University of Wyoming women's golfer during Tuesday's final round of the SDSU Farms Invitational. The Cowgirls hit a 339 (+51) in the third round for a total of 1,003 (+139) on The Farms Golf Club to finish last in the 15-team field. Top-ranked USC won at 875 (+11), No. 8 Arizona was second at 896 (+32) and No. 31 Pepperdine finished third at 904 (+40).
"Today was kind of a mixed bag of the first two days," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We had some really good holes and hit some really good shots, but had some that really hurt us too. We had a couple holes where we really faltered and to do that on a golf course like this is very difficult to recover from. We also had a couple minor injuries that affected a few players and this is the type of course where everyone has to be 100 percent."
Blunt has finished as the top Cowgirl in all four tournaments this spring, while fellow junior Emily Wood tied with her at the last event and was one stroke back of her on Tuesday. Wood posted an 87 (+15) on Tuesday for 59th at 245 (+29). Freshman Kathleen Kershisnik tallied a 255 (+39) after an 88 (+16) in the final round to finish tied for 69th, while senior Dana Zamprelli hit an 83 (+11) to claim 77th at 259 (+43). Sophomore Samantha Stancato scored an 88 (+16) in the final round.
"Stacey is hitting the ball so well right now and that will only increase her confidence heading into the last portion of our season," Stender said. "This was a very mentally grinding course and she didn't let that get to her. She was on the verge of being extremely competitive in a very talented field."
Wyoming hosts the Cowgirl Classic next week on Monday through Wednesday at Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz.
