Cowgirls Play Rain Shortened BYU Dixie Classic
April 4, 2005
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming women's golf team played the first 18 holes of the BYU Dixie Classic on Monday in St. George, Utah, before an afternoon rainstorm forced cancellation of the second round.
Wyoming is tied for 12th of 14 teams with a total of 349 strokes (+61).
Morning winds turned into a microburst rainstorm that led to the canceling of Monday's second round. Gusty winds up to 40 miles per hour also sent scores soaring. Out of 77 golfers only eight had scores in the 70s. Thanks to the stormy winds and hard greens many teams posted their highest rounds of the season during Monday's first round.
No. 26 UNLV, who has claimed the last two BYU Dixie Classic titles, holds a 10-stroke lead over 16th-ranked Arkansas after scoring 320 (+32). Arkansas finished in second at 330 followed by Portland State and Boise State.
Cowgirl freshman Laura Mengelkamp had Wyoming's best round, shooting an 83 (+11), which has her tied for 22nd.
UNLV's Hwanhee Lee leads the tournament with a 75 (+3). Jenny Judd of Boise State is two strokes behind Lee at five-over-par.
The BYU Dixie Classic will resume on Tuesday at Entrada with split tee times beginning at 8 a.m.
The 18th annual two-day tournament is being played at Entrada at Snow Canyon. Entrada plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,151 yards.
