April 8, 2008
CHANDLER, Ariz. -
Following 36 holes and over ten hours of golf, the Wyoming Cowgirl golf team is in third place out of 16 teams following the opening day of the 2008 Cowgirl Classic at the Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz. The Cowgirls shot a two-round total of 613 (+37) and trail Nevada and Eastern Washington, who each shot 611 (+35), by only two strokes.
The Cowgirls began the tournament with an opening round score of 311 (+23). Then, the Cowgirls fired a second round score of 302 (+14), which is the fourth lowest round in the history of Cowgirl golf. This season, the Cowgirls have shot the best four team rounds in school history.
"I am really proud of everybody because, as a team, we really stepped up when we needed to today," said UW head coach Josey Stender. "We have had a pretty good spring thus far and we brought a lot of momentum into this event. It only added to that momentum that this was our tournament and we wanted to come out and do well.
"The girls did a good job of managing the course today. They were very comfortable and confident and that only grew as the day went on, which was evident in our second round score of 302. It is especially great that this team has those top-four rounds in school history because everyone, from the freshmen to the seniors, has contributed."
The Cowgirls are currently led by senior Laura Mengelkamp who is in sole possession of second place in the field of 92 golfers. Mengelkamp fired a 36 hole total of 148 (+4) today. She began the day with an opening round score of 73 (+1) and then fired a second round score of 75 (+3).
Six Cowgirls are currently in the top-30 of the field. Behind Mengelkamp, sophomore Sarah Fogerty is in a fifth place tie (151, +7), junior Mikala Henzlik is in 19th (156, +12) and sophomore Jonelle Martinez and seniors Lindsay Bauknecht and Kaelee Aegerter are tied for 28th place (159, +15).
Northern Arizona shot an opening day score of 623 (+47) to gain control of fourth place and Montana shot a 633 (+57) to round out the top-five of the team scores. Nevada shot a very impressive second round 297 (+11), which is a Cowgirl Classic team record.
Individually, South Dakota State's Hillary Gerster leads the tournament after two rounds of even par 72 for a total of 144. Mengelkamp is in second with a score of 148 and Nevada's Melanie DeLeon is in third place (149, +5).
The 2008 Cowgirl Classic will conclude tomorrow as the teams play a final round of 18 holes. The day will begin with a 7:30 a.m. (Pacific Time) shotgun start.
"We are very excited for tomorrow," added Stender. "It is going to be a battle out there and a race for first place. We are looking forward to contending for our second trophy of the year."
