Zamprelli Leads Wyoming during Cowgirl Classic's First Round
April 8, 2013
CHANDLER, Ariz. -
Senior Dana Zamprelli battled windy conditions during Monday's first round of the Cowgirl Classic to card a 79 (+7) and lead the University of Wyoming women's golf team to a tie for 12th at 331 (+43) in the 19-team field at Ocotillo Golf Resort. The host Cowgirls fought wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour to trail seven teams by nine strokes, while fellow MW-competitor Boise State leads the field at 307 (+19).
"I'm proud of the way the team adjusted their game plan today with some unusual weather around here," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "They didn't let the wind affect their tempo much and really stuck with their routines. The wind just made some holes really difficult and unfortunately we were at some of those holes at the wrong time. With all the water on the course, it gets hard to adjust for."
Zamprelli is seeking her first top-25 finish this season, as she ended the first round tied for 16th in the 103-person field. Sophomore Samantha Stancato is one stroke back tied for 23rd. Playing as an individual, sophomore Kristen Jensen hit an 85 (+13) to sit tied for 66th, while junior Stacey Blunt and freshman Kathleen Kershisnik are tied for 72nd at 86 (+14). Junior Emily Wood posted an 87 (+15), while redshirt freshman Emily Woodard, also playing as an individual, carded an 88 (+16).
"Dana and Samantha played well today because of their mental toughness," Stender said. "Dana played like I know she can: aggressive, smart and confident. Samantha is doing well at learning from all of her experiences this semester, whether they are positive or negative. Hopefully, she can keep doing that."
Competition resumes at 7:30 a.m. MT tomorrow with the second round. Fans can follow live results by clicking on the link above.
"Obviously, we are very capable of scoring well on this course," Stender said. "We need to continue to believe we are doing the right thing and not let the things we can't control affect us. We have to play our own game and not worry about anyone else. We've proven that works for us."
