April 9, 2013
CHANDLER, Ariz. -
Junior Emily Wood carded a team-low 75 (+3) on Tuesday at the Cowgirl Classic at Ocotillo Golf Resort, as the University of Wyoming women's golf team sits 15th in the 19-team field after a 317 (+29) in the second round for a total of 648 (+72). The host Cowgirls are nine strokes back of five schools in the tightly-packed field and trail leader Boise State who has a 608 (+32).
"We shot better today as a team, but we still know we can go lower on this course," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "It was kind of roller coaster today from the perspective that we had some great stretches, but also hit some rough patches. I think the team put too much pressure on themselves from knowing the conditions were going to be better so we had to shoot lower."
Wood sits tied for 48th at 162 (+18), while senior Dana Zamprelli remains the top Cowgirl in the individual standings at 161 (+17) to tie for 40th after an 82 (+10) in the second round. Junior Stacey Blunt shot 79 (+7) on Tuesday to sit tied with sophomore Samantha Stancato at 165 (+21) for 61st. Stancato hit 85 (+13) in the second round. Freshman Kathleen Kershisnik improved her score by four strokes with an 81 (+9) to tie for 72nd at 167 (+23). Sophomore Kristen Jensen and redshirt Emily Woodard, playing as individuals, hit rounds of 83 (+11) and 89 (+17), respectively.
"Emily [Wood] played a lot better today," Stender said. "Overall, all aspects of her game were a little sharper today. Stacey [Blunt] had the potential to go even lower, but just couldn't get a put to fall. Kathleen [Kershisnik] also played very well for about 15 holes today."
The tournament concludes with 18 holes starting at at 7:30 a.m. MT tomorrow. Fans can follow live results through GolfStat.com.
