Blunt and Wood Finish as Top Wyoming Golfers at Cowgirl Classic
April 10, 2013
CHANDLER, Ariz. -
Juniors Emily Wood and Stacey Blunt tied for 42nd at 240 (+24) to lead the University of Wyoming women's golf team to 11th in the final team standings at the Cowgirl Classic on Wednesday at Ocotillo Golf Resort. The host Cowgirls carded a 306 (+18) in the final round to move up four team spots with a total of 954 (+90).
"I'm proud of this team for going out today and finishing this tournament strong," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We wouldn't have jumped four spots in the team standings without everyone having the same goal in mind. We knew we could shoot a round like this and we finally put it together with the right weather conditions and the right positive confident mentality. I'd like to thank Troon Golf and our numerous volunteers that helped make the tournament a real home away from home."
Blunt carded a team-low 75 (+3) and Wood hit a 78 (+6) in the final round, as the two tied for the second time this spring. Both notched a 230 (+14) at the BYU Entrada Classic two weeks ago. One of the two has been the top Cowgirl at the last five tournaments this season. Senior Dana Zamprelli posted an 80 (+8) on Wednesday to tie for 46th at 241 (+25). Sophomore Samantha Stancato finished one stroke back in a tie for 52nd after a 77 (+5) in the final round and freshman Kathleen Kershisnik was one stroke back of Stancato in a tie for 60th at 243 (+27) with a 76 (+4) on Wednesday. The top five Cowgirls all finished within three strokes of each other. Sophomore Kristen Jensen and redshirt freshman Emily Woodard totaled 247 (+31) and 262 (+46), respectively, playing as individuals.
"Emily [Wood] and Stacey [Blunt] are really two very different types of players, but understand their strengths and weaknesses," Stender said. "They know how to take advantage of those in each situation. Kathleen is also coming into her own and getting great experience as a true freshman."
Boise State won the 19-team Cowgirl Classic at 901 (+37), while Xavier was second at 920 (+56) and Portland State rounded out the top three at 924 (+60). The Broncos' Hayley Young took the individual title at 214 (-2), while Portland State's Aram Choi and Britney Yada finished second and third, respectively, with 221 (+5) and 226 (+6).
Wyoming continues its spring season at the Fresno State Lexus Classic on Monday and Tuesday in Fresno, Calif.
