Wyoming Concludes Action at Cowgirl Classic
April 11, 2012
Chandler, Ariz. -
Junior Dana Zamprelli battled winds approaching 30 miles per hour to card a 78 (+6) during Wednesday's final round of the Cowgirl Classic and lead the University of Wyoming women's golf team to 17th place in the final team standings with a total of 931 (+67). The host UW Cowgirls shot 318 (+30) in the gusty conditions at the Ocotillo Golf Resort, while Iowa's total of 884 (+20) topped the 24-team field.
"We didn't perform up to our team goals for this event, because each individual didn't execute minor aspects of their game," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We put too much pressure on the outcome, but this team will take this as a learning experience and redirect our focus to preparing for the conference tournament."
Zamprelli entered the day in search of her third top-25 finish of the spring, but slipped to 32nd in the final standings at 228 (+12). Sophomore Stacey Blunt also carded a 78 (+6) on the day to finish tied for 71st at 236 (+20), while senior Juanita Rico and sophomore Emily Wood tied for 64th at 234 (+18) after rounds of 80 and 82, respectively, on Wednesday. Freshman Samantha Stancato round out UW's lineup at 243 (+27). Senior Jenna Zamprelli and redshirt freshman Kristen Jensen competed as individuals and finished at 237 (+21) and 254 (+38).
"Dana had some errors during her tournament, but she did a great job of not letting them compound and affect her mentally," Stender said. "She really approached each shot with new enthusiasm."
The Hawkeyes carded a final round of 294 (+6) to win the team title after sitting second entering the day, but were pushed by Colorado State at 890 (+26). The Rams were led by an outstanding effort from Brianna Espinoza who captured the individual title with a tournament record 208 (-8). She was one of just two competitors to finish below par in the tournament. Last year's champion Portland State finished third at 901 (+37), UTEP claimed fourth with a 905 (+41) and Sacramento State rounded out the top five at 907 (+43).
"Once again the staff at Ocotillo and Troon Golf were fantastic," Stender said. "I couldn't ask for a better resort to host our spring tournament at. I would also like to thank all our volunteers and parents for their help throughout the event."
Wyoming concludes its 2011-12 season at the Mountain West Championships on April 20-22 at the Wigwam Resort in Phoenix, Ariz.
