Stancato's Career Day Paces Cowgirls in Fresno
April 15, 2013
FRESNO, Calif. -
Sophomore Samantha Stancato is fifth in the individual standings after shooting a season-low 74 (+2) and a career-low 71 (-1) during Monday's first two rounds of the Fresno State Lexus Classic, as she led the University of Wyoming women's golf team to 10th in the 15-team field at 615 (+39). The Cowgirls carded a 315 (+27) in the first round, but improved with a season-low 300 (+12) in the second round at Copper River Country Club.
"We started the morning a little sluggish and the wind blew the whole day, but the girls played well today," UW Golf Director Joe Jensen said. "I was impressed with the team. They had the right frame of mind thanks to a good weekend of practice. We are two strokes back of two good Mountain West teams in Fresno State and New Mexico and now have a chance to be in a competitive situation with them tomorrow. We're going to have to play well."
Stancato is just four strokes off the lead, as she seeks her fourth career top-25 finish and third this season. Her second-round 71 (-1) today was two strokes better than her previous career low. She finished tied for 22nd at last year's Fresno State Lexus Classic.
"Obviously Samantha played terrific today," Jensen said. "She played hard, loose and confident and that's how you can shoot when you do that. When you play in the moment and don't get frustrated. She had a great composure about her today."
Senior Dana Zamprelli is tied for 42nd at 155 (+11) after she shot an 81 (+9) in the first round and tied a season low with a 74 (+2) in the second round. Junior Stacey Blunt hit rounds of 81 (+9) and 77 (+5) to sit three strokes back in a tie for 53rd. Freshman Kathleen Kershisnik is tied for 66th at 160 (+16) with rounds of 79 (+7) and 81 (+9), while junior Emily Wood is one stroke back after an 83 (+11) and 78 (+6).
"The challenge tomorrow is to maintain this feeling," Jensen said. "We can't afford to get off to a slow start like we did today. We're going to feel a little pressure, but we have to play loose and funnel that excitement into confidence."
The tournament concludes with 18 holes tomorrow morning. Fans can follow live results through GolfStat.com.
