Stancato Finishes Fourth at Fresno State Lexus Classic
April 16, 2013
FRESNO, Calif. -
Sophomore Samantha Stancato fired a 75 (+3) in Tuesday's final round of the Fresno State Lexus Classic to finish fourth in the individual standings at 220 (+4) and pace the University of Wyoming women's golf team to 12th in the final team standings at 927 (+63). The Cowgirls shot 312 (+24) in the final round at Copper River Country Club, while Long Beach State won the 15-team event by one stroke over Tulsa with a total of 892 (+28).
"Overall, this was a very good tournament for the Cowgirls," UW Golf Director Joe Jensen said. "We beat some good teams and were competitive with some good Mountain West schools, so that is encouraging for our team going into the conference tournament. Today was tough because of the wind and temperatures and we got off to a slow start on the back nine, but the positive was they all played well at times."
Stancato started the day in fifth individually, but put up a double bogey and bogey in her first three holes. She fought back with just two bogeys over the next 11 holes and notched birdies on two of the final four holes to card the lowest tournament score by a Cowgirl this season. Her finish is the highest for a Wyoming golfer since Juanita Rico finished fourth at the same event last season. Stancato earned the highest finish of her career and fourth career top-25 finish.
"Sam went 40 on the back nine today and 35 on the front nine to really hang tough throughout the round," Jensen said. "She was tentative at the start, but really settled in and that was key. She had a good plan and felt comfortable with what she wanted to do on each hole. She didn't have a lot of indecision. She hit a lot of good shots and had a lot of good looks at putts."
Senior Dana Zamprelli hit a 78 (+6) in the third round to finish tied for 45th at 233 (+17), while freshman Kathleen Kershisnik totaled 237 (+21) with a 77 (+5) on the final day to tie for 58th. Juniors Stacey Blunt and Emily Wood both hit 82 (+10) in the third round to finish at 240 (+24) and 243 (+27), respectively.
Wyoming concludes the 2012-13 season at the Mountain West Championship in Rancho Mirage, Calif., on April 25-27.
