Cowgirls Card Third-Best Round on Day Two of MW Championship
April 21, 2012
Phoenix, Ariz. -
All five members of the University of Wyoming women's golf team lowered their score during Saturday's second round of the Mountain West Championship, as the Cowgirls fired a 304 (+16) for the third-best round of the day. With temperatures approaching 100 degrees at the Wigwam Resort, the top four Cowgirls combined for 10 birdies to help UW move into sixth place at 621 (+45) and enter tomorrow's final round five strokes back of three teams.
"I'm very pleased with how our team rebounded from yesterday's round, especially I feel like our short game really came through today," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We still weren't perfect because we were getting into trouble off the tee, but we recovered well. Our round today made a statement that we know we can play well in this highly competitive conference."
Senior Juanita Rico and junior Dana Zamprelli once again spearheaded Wyoming's effort, as the two combined to move up seven spots on the individual leaderboard. Rico posted four birdies during the round for a 73 (+1) to sit eighth at 150 (+6) and has six total birdies for the second most in the tournament. She also ranks second in par five scoring, averaging 4.75 strokes on the hole. Zamprelli improved her second-round score by four strokes with a 74 (+2) to move into a tie for 12th.
"The difference for Juanita today was having those four birdies and that was impressive considering the tough hole locations on the course today," Stender said. "Dana played pretty much the same today as she did yesterday, but didn't have troubles on the 18th hole during this round."
Sophomore Stacey Blunt notched a 78 (+6) during the second round to sit 24th at 160 (+16), while freshman Samantha Stancato is one stroke in front of her tied for 22nd after shooting a 79 (+7) today. Sophomore Emily Wood posted an 82 (+10) and is tied for 32nd at 165 (+21).
No. 35 TCU continues to lead the field at 603 (+27) after carding a 299 (+11) during today's second round. No. 45 San Diego State is second at 608 (+32), while Colorado State rounds out the top three at 616 (+40). TCU's Sanna Nuutinen is the only player under par, as she leads the individual race at 143 (-1).
Wyoming is paired with Boise State for tomorrow's final round, which begins at 8 a.m. MT. Fans can follow live results on Golfstat.com through the link above.
"It's going to be a test for us tomorrow to not be concerned with what other teams are doing," Stender said. "We need to focus on the task at hand. We'll get to start early so we can set our own pace and concern ourselves with what we need to do during the round."
