Rico Caps Wyoming Career with Top-25 Finish at MW Championship
April 22, 2012
Senior Juanita Rico ended her Cowgirl career with an 11th-place finish at the Mountain West Championship after shooting a 79 (+7) during Sunday's third round to lead the University of Wyoming women's golf team to seventh in the team standings. UW posted a 324 (+36) as a team during the final round for a total of 945 (+81) at the Wigwam Resort.
"I'm disappointed with our score and place at this tournament, but it's certainly not indicative of our spring season and the successes we've had individually and as a team," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We played very emotional today and probably let the situation and our nerves get the best of us. It was a combination of a couple things for us today."
Rico earned two more birdies during Sunday's round to finish with a tournament-high eight and tallied a total score of 229 (+13). She collected the 22nd top-25 finish of her career and seventh this season. Junior Dana Zamprelli shot an 81 (+9) in the final round to finish 19th at 233 (+17) for her third career top-25 finish. Sophomore Stacey Blunt carded an 81 (+9) on Sunday as well to put her 28th at 241 (+25), while fellow sophomore Emily Wood finished the tournament with an 83 (+11) for a total of 248 (+32). Wood tied for 32nd with freshman Samantha Stancato, who also shot 248 (+32).
"I told Juanita after the round how extremely proud I am to have coached her," Stender said. "The impact she has had on the Wyoming golf program has been unbelievable. She's been a part of every success we've had as a team and has done so leading the way for us."
No. 35 TCU led the tournament wire-to-wire to take home the MW team title at 904 (+40), after shooting 301 (+13) on Sunday. No. 47 UNLV moved up to second on the final day with a 292 (+4) in the final round to finish at 909 (+45), while No. 45 San Diego State rounded out the top three teams at 911 (+47). TCU's Sanna Nuutinen and San Diego State's Christine Wong tied at 217 (+1) through three rounds, before Nuutinen won the individual title after four tiebreak rounds.
"Every Cowgirl developed and improved all aspects of their game this spring," Stender said. "They can go into their summer play and next fall feeling very positive about what we accomplished this season. We ended on a bit of a down note, but we had plenty of high notes this spring."
