Cowgirls Card Third-Lowest Round at MW Championship on Friday
April 26, 2013
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -
The University of Wyoming women's golf team shot a 305 (+17) on Friday for the third-lowest total during the second round of the 2013 Mountain West Championship at Mission Hill Country Club. All five Cowgirls improved their score on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course, including two by double-digit strokes, as UW sits five strokes back of seventh-place New Mexico with a total of 648 (+72). No. 50 UNLV leads at 604 (+28), while Boise State and Fresno State are tied for second at 614 (+38).
"We played today's round with the same confidence as yesterday, but also the right level of intensity," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We really managed the golf course with a lot more assurance today and conditions improved so that helped as well."
Sophomore Emily Wood posted Wyoming's lowest round of the day at 75 (+3) and continued to lead the Cowgirls at 159 (+15) for 24th. She is seeking her third top-25 finish of the season. Senior Dana Zamprelli and sophomore Samantha Stancato are tied for 28th at 162 (+18), after shooting rounds of 77 (+5) and 76 (+4), respectively, in the second round. Junior Stacey Blunt dropped 13 strokes from her first-round score with a 77 (+5) on Friday and is 36th at 167 (+23). Freshman Kathleen Kershisnik is 38th at 172 (+28) after an 84 (+12) in the second round.
"This team knew they were better than yesterday's round," Stender said. "They knew they prepared right and were ready to go. They didn't make the little mistakes that they did yesterday. On this level of golf course, little mistakes can turn into big numbers."
The third and final round of the MW Championship will begin Saturday at 8:30 a.m. MT. Fans can follow live results through Golfstat.com.
"We played our own game today and that's what we have to do tomorrow to end this tournament with a good number," Stender said. "We have to do what's best for us on this golf course. We can't let anything on the outside affect us or our nerves. We've been in this position a lot this semester and we need to have that mentality tomorrow that we are going to bounce back even better."
