Wyoming Women Finish Eighth at MW Golf Championship
April 27, 2013
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -
The University of Wyoming women's golf team concluded the 2012-13 season with a 321 (+33) during Saturday's third round of the Mountain West Championship to finish the event in eighth with a total of 969 (+105) at Mission Hill Country Club. No. 50 UNLV won the team title at 904 (+40) to outpace Boise State, 916 (+52), and Fresno State, 918 (+54), on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course.
"We played today's round fairly similar to yesterday, but we were just a few holes short of scoring the same," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We were close, but just not quite close enough. The conference tournament was sort of the definition of our season. We had some stellar rounds, but also some rounds that you wonder where they came from. The positive thing is that we have four returning players that can take advantage of the experiences they have gone through and carry that through the summer into the fall."
Sophomore Emily Wood finished tied for 24th at 238 (+22) thanks to a 79 (+7) in Saturday's final round. She has notched the first three top-25 finishes of her career this season. Senior Dana Zamprelli had the lowest round for Wyoming on Saturday, as she carded a 78 (+6) to tie for 29th at 240 (+24). Sophomore Samantha Stancato tied for 33rd at 244 (+28) with an 82 (+10) in the final round, while Stacey Blunt hit the same in the third round to tie for 36th at 249 (+33). Freshman Kathleen Kershisnik posted an 85 (+13) to total 257 (+41) and finish 38th.
"Today was a great example of Dana's career," Stender said. "She started off really up and down on the front nine, but fought hard on the back nine and finished with a birdie on a very difficult hole. To come through in the final round with a good score says a lot about her and her desire for this team."
