Barker Paces Wyoming on First Day of CSU Tournament
Fort Collins, Colo. -
Freshman Tyler Barker fired two rounds of 76 (+4) to pace the University of Wyoming women's golf team to 13th place through the first day of the CSU Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic on Monday at the Ptarmigan Country Club. Facing a strong field in their first tournament of the fall, the Cowgirls shot rounds of 305 and 308 for a 613 (+37) to sit 17 strokes back of six teams. No. 32 Texas Tech leads the 17-team field at 575 (-1).
"I'm obviously very proud of how Tyler played today," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "She has a lot of poise on the course and is emotionally even keeled. She doesn't let the little things bother her. Her short game was phenomenal in the first round and she just built on that confidence in the second round."
In her first collegiate appearance as a Cowgirl, Barker carded five birdies to sit tied for 36th place through the first two rounds. Senior Dana Zamprelli and junior Emily Wood tied for UW's lowest round of the day at 75 (+3) and both finished the day with a two-round total of 153 (+9) to tie for 42nd. Playing as an individual, sophomore Kristen Jensen tied for 52nd through two rounds after setting her career low twice for a total of 154 (+10). Her second round of 76 (+4) bested her career low by six strokes. Fellow sophomore Samantha Stancato was 72nd with a 159 (+15) and junior Stacey Blunt was 79th at 163 (+19).
"We shot 11 strokes better today than in the same tournament last year, so that really shows the balance we have this year from top to bottom," Stender said. "Both of the rounds could have been lower, though. We had a few holes that were problems for us, so if we minimize those we should have a lower score tomorrow."
The tournament concludes with 18 holes beginning tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. Fans can follow live results by clicking on the link above.
"The challenge we have tomorrow is that we can't look back on today," Stender said. "We need to be focused on the task at hand and finish out a solid first tournament of the season. We're not quite there and we still have room for improvement."
