Cowgirls Conclude Ram Fall Classic
Sept. 11, 2012
Fort Collins, Colo. -
Senior Dana Zamprelli carded a 75 (+3) during Tuesday's final round of the CSU Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic to lead the University of Wyoming women's golf team to 13th in the final team standings at 927 (+613). Texas Tech, ranked No. 32 in the nation, won the event with a score of 860 (-4) to top No. 17 Baylor with an 887 (+23) at the Ptarmigan Country Club.
"Today was just a battle for each girl in different ways," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "It was within our reach to move up substantially in the team standings, but we just couldn't quite be in the position we wanted to at the end. We definitely have to improve on handling pressure situations and mental preparation."
Zamprelli's final round was not without struggles as well, though. She triple bogeyed her second hole, but rebounded to shoot three under on the back nine to score 228 (+12) for the tournament and finish tied for 35th. Freshman Tyler Barker concluded a solid first collegiate tournament with a 77 (+5) to tie for 39th at 229 (+13), while junior Emily Wood carded a 234 (+18) to tie for 58th. Junior Stacey Blunt and sophomore Samantha Stancato both hit a 244 (+28) to tie for 77th and sophomore Kristen Jensen finished at 234 (+19) to tie for 62nd playing as an individual.
"Dana really showed she can be a leader of this team today," Stender said. "She had a rough start and came back and really played her game. She has the talent and ability to recover. That's something her teammates can certainly learn from her."
Wyoming continues its fall season at the UNM Dick McGuire Invitational on Monday and Tuesday in Albuquerque, N.M.
"We can take a lot of positives from this first tournament and continue to build on them this fall," Stender said. "We handled some difficult holes well and I was pleased with how we competed with the other Mountain West schools."
