Senior Juanita Rico and freshman Samantha Stancato finished as the top two Cowgirls to help the University of Wyoming women's golf team improve by four strokes in the final round of the CSU Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic. UW notched a 308 (+20) on Tuesday to finish 16th as a team at 932 (+68) overall, while UC Davis took home the title at the Ptarmigan Country Club with an 873 (+9).

"I was encouraged to see that we came back today and played a little more like I know we can," Wyoming head coach Josey Stender said. "We still left a lot of shots out there today, but the course was set up a little more difficult. I felt like our round today was better than just a four-shot improvement."

Rico was seven shots above par entering the day, but quickly got into trouble with three-straight bogeys and a double bogey in the first four holes. She bounced back to shoot par or better on 12 of the final 14 holes to card a 77 (+5) in the final round and finish tied for 44th at 228 (+12).

"Juanita really got off to a rough start, but she showed some mental toughness by fighting back through the round," Stender said. "A lot of things didn't go right for her, but she managed to put a score together and that's what we need a senior leader to do."

Stancato finished as the second Cowgirl on the scoreboard by improving two strokes each of the three rounds in her first collegiate tournament. She posted UW's best performance in the third round with a 76 (+4) to finish at 236 (+18).

"It says a lot about Samantha for her to be a freshman and come in and be this steady and improve each round," Stender said. "She is a real student of the game and that is her strength."

Senior Jenna Zamprelli notched a 77 (+5) in the final round to score a 239 (+23), while sophomores Stacey Blunt and Emily Wood finished the tournament at 236 (+20) and 238 (+22), respectively.

"Mechanically and technique-wise, this is the one of the most talented groups I've had," Stender said. "We just have to continue to progress our mental game and be more mentally tough."

Wyoming returns to action at the New Mexico Dick Maguire Invitational on Sept. 25-26 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
