The University of Wyoming women's golf team battled cold and windy conditions during the first day of competition of the 12-team WSU Cougar Cup to stand in eighth place with the final round to be played tomorrow. UW was led by a consistent effort from junior Samantha Stancato, who finished the day tied for 15th of the 77 total competitors.

Wyoming's first round score of 310 was the second best of the season and fired a second round 319 for a total of 629 (+53). Host Washington State leads the team standings with 588 (+12) overall, as Gonzaga's 594 (+18) and BYU 601 (+25) round out the top three.

"I am pleased with how we showed improvement especially considering the weather and conditions," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "It was nice to see us play pretty solid today and definitely much better than our last outing in New Mexico."

Stancato was three strokes off her career low with 74 (+2) in the second round after a 78 (+6) in the first for a total of 152 (+8). She is twelve strokes off the leader and will be seeking her six top-25 finish, second on the season. Sophomore Kathleen Kershisnik had the Cowgirls' best score after round one with 76 (+4) and carded a 79 (+7) in round two to place tied for 23rd with 155 (+11). Kershisnik was tied for 12th after round one and is looking for her first career top-25 finish. Senior Emily Wood, who was UW's top finisher at the UNM Dick McGuire Invitational Tournament didn't seem to miss a beat with rounds of 77 (+5) and 79 (+7) for 156 (+12). With Tuesday's final round remaining she is tied for 28th. Freshman Taylor Dorans carded a first round score of 79 (+7) and 87 (+15) with one round remaining to place in a tie for 59th for a total of 166 (+22), while fellow freshman Mackenzie Barrie's 80 (+8) from the first 18 and 87 (+15) has her in a tie for 62nd with 167 (+23).

"We will take every tournament is a learning experience and we're looking forward to tomorrow. As long we continue to feel confident and make good decisions, I think it will go well for us." Stender added.

The final round will begin at 9:15 a.m. MT tomorrow.
