Cowgirl Golf Finishes Eighth at Cougar Cup
Sept. 24, 2013
PULLMAN, Wash. -
Propelled by five solid efforts, the University of Wyoming women's golf team was able to overcome the rain and cold weather to remain and finish in eighth of 12 teams on the final day of the Washington State Cougar Cup Tuesday. Wyoming, which has played 144 holes the last six days, fired a final round 315 (+27) and ended with a three-round total of 944 (+80), the second best of the season.
"Our score was better today in relation to how the conditions were and how we have been playing," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "The weather was difficult to deal with, it was raining hard all day and cold for this time of the year but the way the girls competed and fought through it was great to see."
Junior Samantha Stancato led the Cowgirls for the second tournament this year, carding a final round 78 (+6) to finish with 230 (+14) in a tie for 14th. It was her second top-25 finish this year and sixth of her career. Sophomore Kathleen Kershisnik posted her first career top-25 finish with another solid final round to tie for 23rd with a three day total of 235 (+19) after her third round score of 80 (+8), while senior Emily Wood shot an 83 (+11) Tuesday to finish the tournament tied for 40th with 239 (+23).
Freshman Mackenzie Barrie shot a career low 76 (+4) in Tuesday's final round to move up nine spots to finish 50th with 243 (+27), as fellow freshman Taylor Dorans finished 57th with 247 (+31) after her third round score of 81 (+9).
"We need our upper classmen to continue to be consistent. Sam's top-15 finish is huge and it was Kathleen's best career finish and that really helped us," added Stender. "It says a lot about these girls to be able to maintain and continue to improve with the amount of golf they have played recently."
Tournament host Washington State took home the team trophy with 886 (+22), as Gonzaga 898 (+34) placed second and Idaho moved into third with 914 (+50). WSU's Mallory Kent won the individual title with 212 (-4) with Lea Garner of BYU and Alice Kim from Gonzaga tied second with 219 (+3).
The Wyoming women will return to action at the Price's "Give `Em Five" Intercollegiate on Oct. 7-9 in Las Cruces, N.M.
