Boosted by three top-ten individual finishes and an all-time school best event total, the Wyoming Cowgirl golf team placed second on Tuesday at the MDA Invitational in Spokane, Wash.

The Cowgirls recorded a final round tally of 301 (+13), totaling 906 (+42) for the 54-hole tournament and earning a second place finish of 13 schools. Eastern Washington won the team title with a score of 901.

UW's finish was significant for two reasons; first, it was the team's highest finish at an event since the year 2000 when they also placed second of 14 teams at the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islander Classic.

Wyoming's 906-stroke total also established a new all-time school record total for 54-holes. UW scored 311 (+23) and a school record 294 (+6) during Monday's play, in addition to their mark of 301 from Tuesday to set the three-round record. It is the second time in as many events this year that the Cowgirls have broken that record. On Sept. 11 at the Ram Fall Classic, Wyoming posted a then all-time best total of 924 (+60).

UW's second round team scorecard of 294 was also the event best by any school.

"I'm not surprised at all by our results at this tournament," said Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender. "This is a mainly young but mature team that is poised to play well. They know they can compete at every event and are figuring out that you just have to play the course and not worry about what others are doing. The progress that we are making as a program is just amazing.

"The difference between our first round and the last two rounds was that the team felt good on the greens. They went into today's final round with the intent to win. It was an intense 18 holes and there were some nerves, but those went away quickly as everyone is getting used to these type of situations."

Steady as always, Cowgirl senior Laura Mengelkamp shot a final round of even-par 72 and placed fourth out of 84 entrants. Her three-round total was 224 (+8) and she now has ten top-five finishes in her career, and 22 in the top-25 of a major field.

UC-Riverside's Jennifer Bermingham won the individual title with a total of 217 (+1). Cal Poly's Hannah Brabb was second at 221 and Eastern Washington's Kellie Holmstedt was third (223).

Mengelkamp was one of three Cowgirls who placed in the top-ten and one of four who finished in the top-20. Sophomore Jonelle Martinez placed sixth with her total of 227 (+11) and fellow second-year UW player Sarah Fogerty tied for seventh place at 228 (+12). Freshman Molly Black had a good tournament and tied for 18th place with a score of 233 (+17).

Cowgirl freshman Jenna Zamprelli counted a third round score of 76 (+4) towards the team total and placed in a tie for 46th overall. UW senior Kaelee Aegerter shot 80, 80 and 81 while playing as an individual.

The tournament was played at Hangman Valley Golf Course, a 6,176 yard, par 72 layout.

Wyoming will next compete at the CU/Heather Farr Memorial on Oct. 1-2 in Broomfield, Colo.
