Sept. 25, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The 2001 University of Denver Intercollegiate concluded on Tuesday with the Wyoming Cowgirls finishing in 14th place in the field of 14 teams. Wyoming finished the tournament with a 36-hole total of 676. The DU Pioneers captured the team title with a final score of 599.
"We played better today, improving our total score by 10 strokes," said UW women's golf coach Jill Johnson. "Kim (Nissen) shot an 82, as did Alison (McGuire), but no one could really put together a great round for us. Ashley Cariveau, who was playing as an individual, shot a seven-over par round of 79, which was an outstanding round.
"I was pleased with the improvement from day one, but now we have to build on that improvement next week when we travel to the University of Idaho."
The individual champion was Kelly Schaub of Denver. Schaub shot a two-round total of 138. Her six-under par total was the only sub-par total for the two-day tournament.
The Denver Intercollegiate featured two 18-hole rounds, one each on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 24 and 25. The tournament was played at the Highlands Ranch Golf Course in Highlands Ranch, Colo. The course measured 6,252 yards and played to a par of 72.
Wyoming's next tournament is the University of Idaho Lady Vandal Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 1 and 2 in Moscow, Idaho.
