Barker and Wood Top Cowgirls at Rose City Collegiate
Oct. 1, 2012
Aurora, Ore. -
Freshman Tyler Barker and junior Emily Wood both sit tied for 25th at 156 (+12) through Monday's first two rounds of the Rose City Collegiate, as the University of Wyoming women's golf team sits eighth in the team standings at 628 (+52). Seattle shot a 594 (+18) to lead the 13-team field at Langdon Farms Golf Club, but the Cowgirls are within 11 strokes of the three teams in front of them.
"We would have stretches of being steady today, but then have a couple holes that we would get big numbers on," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "That is hard to recover from and that really is what has plagued us the last two tournaments. Overall, we didn't do anything overly poor today, but we just didn't do anything overly great either."
Barker and Wood are both seeking their first career top-25 finishes after solid first days. Barker opened with an 81 (+9) and followed with UW's lowest round of the day in a 75 (+3), while Wood carded scores of 79 (+7) and 77 (+5). Junior Stacey Blunt and sophomore Samantha Stancato sit two strokes back at 158 (+14) in a tie for 34th. Both posted rounds of 78 (+6) and 80 (+8) on the day. Senior Dana Zamprelli is tied for 61st with a 165 (+21) after rounds of 83 (+11) and 82 (+10).
"Stacey and Tyler were both grinders today and really worked for solid scores after facing some adversity early on," Stender said. "It was good to see Samantha and Emily being pretty steady all day long. Everyone had pretty good course management today."
The tournament concludes with 18 holes beginning at 9 a.m. MT tomorrow.
"Tomorrow is going to be about staying with the same game plan," Stender said. "This is the type of course where you can't force birdies to happen. We need to continue to have the same course management, but minimize those big numbers and we will be able to get some birdies out there."
