Stancato Posts Top-25 Finish to Pace Cowgirls in Oregon
Oct. 2, 2012
Aurora, Ore. -
Sophomore Samantha Stancato fired a season-low 75 (+3) during Tuesday's final round of the Rose City Collegiate to finish tied for 22nd individually and lead the University of Wyoming women's golf team to ninth in the final team standings. The Cowgirls totaled 948 (+84) at Langdon Farms Golf Club, while CSU Fullerton topped the 13-team field at 912 (+48).
"Samantha scrambled well today when she put herself in tough spots and was able to recover," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "She put herself in good opportunities to score. We've been working on her mental focus and ability to capitalize on her athleticism and I felt like she did that this weekend."
Stancato's season low propelled her to a total of 233 (+17) and her second career top-25 finish, after she also finished tied for 22nd at the Fresno State Lexus Classic last season. Freshman Tyler Barker rounded out another solid tournament with a 238 (+22) to finish tied for 34th after shooting an 82 (+10) on Tuesday. Junior Stacey Blunt carded the same total in the final round to finish two total strokes back tied for 39th. Senior Dana Zamprelli hit an 81 (+9) to finish at 246 (+30) tied for 57th. Junior Emily Wood shot a 75 (+3) in the final round, but signed an incorrect scorecard and was subsequently disqualified. If her score would have counted, Wyoming would have finished eighth in the final team standings.
"Emily really did play well today, but just made a mental mistake at the end," Stender said. "I hate to see that happen, but you just have to take it as a learning lesson."
Stender said the team has improved in a lot of areas this fall and is slowly working out some inconsistent play that has troubled the Cowgirls in the past.
"You can't compare scores straight across all our tournaments, but I feel encouraged that we are starting to play more consistent from top to bottom," Stender said. "We've had different players step up for us this fall, but, with 10 days off before our next tournament, I'd like to see a couple players start to perform the way I know they can."
UW concludes the fall season by hosting the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Oct. 13-14 at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
