Cowgirl Golf Places Third at Bronco Fall Invite
Oct. 9, 2007
KUNA, Idaho -
On Tuesday, for the second straight day high winds made life miserable for college golf at the Bronco Fall Invitational in Kuna, Idaho. The Wyoming Cowgirl golf team shot a team round of 345 (+57) and held onto their third place standing in the field of 13 teams.
According to tournament officials, conditions during the final round of 18 holes were extremely windy with gusts up to 50 miles an hour. Only one team round was recorded under 330, a 328 (+40) by team champion Nebraska. More than half of the field had scores over 350. Individually, there were only three scorecards in the 70's, and in a rarity for collegiate golf scores, there were multiple rounds that topped 100.
UW's three-round total of 978 (+114) put them behind only NU at 946 (+82) and Kansas State, who totaled 957 (+93). Tournament host Boise State finished a distant fourth behind the Cowgirls at 989 (+125).
Wyoming shot rounds of 323 (+35) and 310 (+22) on Monday.
"This was the most difficult round of golf I've ever been associated with," said Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender. "Yesterday's wind made play hard, but today's was just unbelievable. I am proud of my team and the way they hung tough and put in a gutsy performance."
All five Cowgirls playing on the team scorecard finished 30th or better in the field of 78 participants.
Sophomore Sarah Fogerty had the highest UW finish by tying for seventh place. That position ties her career best event finish. Fogerty shot 84 (+12) during the final round to finish at 241 (+25).
Senior Laura Mengelkamp had a 54-hole total of 243 (+27) and tied for 11th. Freshman Molly Black tied for 27th, while sophomore Jonelle Martinez and freshman Jenna Zamprelli tied for 30th.
UW senior Kaelee Aegerter competed as an individual at the event.
Nebraska's Allison Stewart and Kansas State's Michelle Regan tied for first place in the individual standings with three-round totals of 233 (+17).
The event was played at Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna, which measures 6,193 yards, par 72.
Wyoming's next tournament will be Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 15-16, at the SDSU Lady Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif.
