Cowgirl Golf Closes out Fall Season in Palm Desert

Senior Stacey Blunt tied for 13th place individually to pace the University of Wyoming women’s golf team to tenth in the final team standings with 926 (+62) during Sunday’s final round of the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
“Troon Golf and their entire staff at the Classic Club did a tremendous job to make us feel home away from home,” UW head coach Josey Stender said. “It was definitely a first class venue and another great experience for us.”
Cal Poly’s Taylor Yoshitake took home medalist honors with a score of 213 (-3), while CSU Fullerton won the 20-team tournament with 909 (+45).
Blunt shot her best round of the tournament on Sunday with a 74 (+2) and claimed her eighth top-25 finish of her career and second this fall. She finished with a 227 (+11) for the tournament. Sophomore Kathleen Kershisnik carded a 230 (+14) after a final round score of 76 (+4) and ended tied for 25th. It was also her second top-25 finish this fall. Senior Emily Wood shot a final round 78 (+6) to tie for 41st with a score of 234 (+18). Freshman Taylor Dorans fell back to 50th place with 236 (+20) after shooting 82 (+10) in the final round. Junior Samantha Stancato carded an 85 (+13) Sunday to finish tied 72nd at 243 (+27).
“Kathleen and Stacey carried us these last two tournaments,” Stender mentioned. “Stacey had her two best finishes back-to-back which is great to see and hopefully that continues on to the spring season.”
Freshman Mackenzie Barrie finished with a 230 (+14) after firing a final round 76 (+4). Kristen Jensen and Emily Woodard each totaled a 247 (+31) after carding a 78 (+6) and 80 (+8), respectively during the final round. Barrie, Jensen and Woodard all played as individuals.
“I was really pleased with the effort and determination throughout the tournament and the entire fall. The girls came out each day ready to fight. The freshman really started to come into their own these last few days and we expect to continue to work and have a great spring. This team really works well together and with that we were able to accomplish our goals as a team.” added Stender.
The tournament concludes fall action for the Cowgirls, as they will be off until the Edwin/Watts Kiawah Island Classic on March 2-4.
